Spotting the Signs: How to Identify a Child in Need of Help

Child trafficking doesn’t always look like what we expect. Traffickers often manipulate and exploit children in subtle ways, making it difficult for the public to spot victims. But there are red flags that, if recognized early, can save a child from further harm.

Here are some signs that may indicate a child is being trafficked:

1. Sudden Changes in Behavior

A child who is suddenly withdrawn, anxious, or secretive may be experiencing trauma. They might avoid eye contact, seem afraid to talk openly, or display signs of depression.

2. Unexplained Absences from School

If a child begins missing school frequently or drops out without a clear reason, it could be a sign of trafficking. Traffickers often keep children out of sight by preventing them from attending school.

3. Signs of Physical Abuse or Neglect

Victims of trafficking may show signs of physical harm, such as bruises, burns, or scars. They may also appear malnourished or inadequately cared for.

4. Older or Controlling “Friends”

A child who is frequently seen with an older individual or someone who seems to be controlling their movements could be at risk. Traffickers often pose as romantic partners or “friends” to manipulate victims.

5. Inconsistent Stories

If a child gives conflicting explanations about where they live, who they’re with, or how they spend their time, it could indicate they are being coached by a trafficker to hide their situation.

If you notice any of these signs, take them seriously. Contact local authorities or the national trafficking hotline for guidance on how to proceed. Reporting your concerns could save a child’s life.
