Recognize the Common Signs of Trafficking
Trafficking can happen in any community, and it can happen in plain sight. Knowing what to look for could save a life.
Traffickers prey on vulnerability and work hard to keep their victims invisible. That’s why being able to recognize the warning signs — especially in youth — is one of the most powerful tools we have in the fight against trafficking.
Here are some of the most common indicators that a child or teen may be experiencing sexual exploitation or trafficking:
Behavioral & Emotional Changes
- Dramatic shifts in personality — suddenly secretive, aggressive, withdrawn, or fearful
- Evasive behavior, particularly when asked about a new “boyfriend” or “girlfriend
- Talking about being “taken care of,” receiving gifts or trips from someone older
- Disengagement from school, sports, extracurriculars, or longtime friends
- Chronic truancy, frequent absences, or dropping out of school altogether
- Running away or frequent unexplained disappearances
- Periods of homelessness or couch-surfing
Unexplained Money or Items
- Excess cash without a job or known income
- Expensive items like designer clothes, shoes, manicures, or high-end electronics
- Multiple cell phones or social media accounts with hidden identities
- Hotel room keys, gift cards, or receipts with unknown origins
Physical & Visual Red Flags
- Branding or tattoos with names, symbols, crowns, or barcodes
- Wearing provocative or age-inappropriate clothing
- Jewelry or clothing that looks like it was given as part of control or ownership
- Possession of sex toys, multiple condoms, or other sexual paraphernalia
- Lying about their age or using fake ID cards
