The traumas incurred by trafficking are immense. In today’s digital world those traumas can be compounded by online photos or videos that remain on the internet for years, even decades.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has released a tool for survivors of sexual exploitation and their caregivers called Take it Down. This resource allows allows children, young adults, and/or parents to report online sexually explicit images and videos that were taken before the child turned 18 years old. These images may be related to sextortion, human trafficking, child sexual abuse, or any other explicit photos or videos of a minor. NCMEC will help to remove images while allowing the user to remain anonymous and not have to send any images or videos to NCMEC. It works by assigning a hash value (digital fingerprint) to the photos/videos and this hash value is used by online platforms to detect and remove the content.
